We report measurements of pure spin currents (spin currents without accompanying charge currents) in a GaAs 2DEG, generated and detected using quantum point contacts in a large in-plane magnetic field. The relaxation length for the spin current polarization in a 1 micron channel is 50 microns. We discuss potential extensions of this experiment to materials with a strong spin-orbit interaction, and to more sensitive measurements of spin-related phenomena in 2D electron gases.
