International Workshop and Seminar on
New Frontiers in Quantum Impurity Physics: From Nano-Structures to Molecular Devices

August 13 - 24, 2007

Scientific coordinators:
Ralf Bulla (Universität Augsburg, Germany)
David E. Logan (Oxford University, UK)
Avraham Schiller (The Hebrew University Jerusalem, Israel)

Organisation:
Katrin Lantsch (MPIPKS Dresden, Germany)

Scope of the Seminar:

Recent experimental and theoretical advances have led to greatly increased interest in quantum impurity physics. Remarkable progress has been made, particularly in the realization of quantum impurity physics in nano-devices such as semiconductor quantum dots and molecular systems, culminating in the observation of Kondo effects in several single-molecule and single-atom transistors. These exciting new developments will be the focus of our seminar and workshop at which we shall cover the following topics:

  • the Kondo effect in quantum dots
  • molecular devices and single-atom transistors
  • quantum impurity physics in biological molecules
  • finite size effects in nano-structures
  • quantum impurities and non-equilibrium physics
  • quantum impurities in a dissipative environment
  • local quantum criticality
  • quantum impurities in correlated materials

The first week of the seminar will contain tutorials and general introductory lectures, aimed in particular at younger scientists and students, while the second week will consist of a conference with a more dense programme of research talks.

Application forms can be filled in online on the workshop's and seminar's webpage. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2007. The registration fee is 100 Euro. Costs for accommodation and meals will be covered by the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems. Please note that child care is available upon request.
