Many desirable properties of a material are determined by its micro-structure. Thus contributing to a precise understanding of micro-structure evolution in materials processing is a great challenge for the newly emerging field of computational materials design.

In this work we carry out numerical simulations in a (two-phase) peritectic system under the influence of fluid flow. A phase-field model is developed in order to numerically simulate solidification processes of binary alloy systems under the influence of convection. Simulation examples are used to show that the combined fluid flow/pattern formation gives rise to a significantly different microstructure than those predicted by the purely diffusive growth models.
