Science is not about answers. Science is about questions and how to solve
them. Systems neuroscience asks questions about the collective behavior of
large systems of neurons and, in so doing, illuminates the dynamics of
neuronal information processing. The format for the workshop Problems in
Systems Neuroscience was inspired by Hilbert. In his talk `Mathematical
Problems' in Paris exactly a century ago, he proposed 23 problems that
provided mathematics with a set of goals.
During the workshop (September 4 -
8) each of the 23 invited speakers will propose a problem and argue why it is
of cardinal importance to the future of systems neuroscience. There will be a
series of lectures on the auditory system in the week preceding the workshop
(August 28 - September 1) and on the visual system in the week following the
workshop (September 11 - 15); the workshop itself aims at merging insights
from both sensory systems and, above all, providing vistas for future
developments. The fourth week (September 18 - 23) will be devoted to attention
in the auditory and visual systems.

Participation is mainly by invitation. Nevertheless, additional applications
will also be considered. Application forms are available upon request or on
the conference web page. The registration fee for the workshop is DM
150. Costs for accommodation and meals will be covered by the Max Planck
Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems. Limited funding to partially
cover travel expenses is available upon request.
