Semiconductor physics has experienced unprecedented developments over the second half of the 20th century. The exponential growth in microelectronic processing power and size of dynamic memories has been achieved by significant downscaling of the minimum feature size. Smaller feature sizes result in increased functional density, faster speed, and lower costs. This way, one is reaching the limits where quantum effects and fluctuations are beginning to play an important role. One of our aims in this meeting is to discuss the physical properties of novel nano systems such as quantum dots, quantum rings, quantum-dot laser, quantum cascade laser, etc.

The bio-electronics part of the meeting is dedicated to a unique attempt to bring together biologists, chemists, physicists, and computer scientists working on various aspects of self assembly, complexity, and error handling. Special emphasis is put on harnessing molecular biology to the assembly of non-biological, functional constructs.
