We investigate the nonequilibrium charge state of a few-electron quantum dot with tunable coupling to left and right reservoirs. Modulation of a single gate is used to initialize the dot into a nonequilibrium charge state, loading a controllable number of electrons from the left reservoir. The second half of the modulation cycle triggers the emission of a controllable number of electrons from the dot into right reservoir. A simple theoretical model is used to illuminate the statistics of the loading and unloading processes under different conditions.
