Active Behavior of the Cell Cytoskeleton

Jean-François Joanny

Institut Curie Section Recherche, Physico Chimie Curie

During this talk I will review our recent results on active gels and their application to the actin-myosin cytoskeleton of cells. After a presentation of the generic hydrodynamic model of active gels and of the dynamic phase diagram of thin films of active gels, I will focus on two aspects: lamellipodium motion and the actin cortical layer. The stability of the actin cortical layer will be discussed and the results compared to experiments on cell oscillations obtained both in the group of C.Sykes (Institut Curie) and by P.Pullarkat (Bayreuth).
