Work with us!

The in-house research and workshop program at the institute creates a vibrant, and attractive research environment. Via the Visitors Program, we are able to support stays of different lengths, and with different purposes, logistically and/or financially as needed. Like this, we can tailor our support to individual needs, profiles, and backgrounds.

Below, you find a list of formats and calls. More specific openings can be found on the 'Jobs'-pages of the individual Research Groups.

Emergency Fellowships for Scientists in Ukraine

The Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI-PKS) offers Emergency Fellowships to researchers at all career stages in Ukraine. Applications are considered continuously.

Please see here for a full description.

PhD Positions

Applications for PhD positions are welcome at all times. Please contact a director or group leader to inquire about openings.

Beside the group openings, there are PhD positions available within the International Max Planck Research School for 'Quantum Dynamics and Control'. Please visit the IMPRS Website for details.

Research groups in biological physics at MPI-PKS are affiliated with the International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental, and Systems Biology, hosted by MPI-CBG, which also offers PhD positions.
Follow this external link to find out more.

For further questions, you are welcome to contact the PhD student representative (phd-repr(at)pks.mpg.de).

Postdoc Positions

The mpipks offers postdoc positions on a competitive basis. The appointment is typically for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension. Candidates are encouraged to contact the group they would like to join, but applications should be submitted according to the Visitors' Program Instructions.

Long and short visits to mpipks

An outstanding feature of mpipks is that - besides the usual support for Ph.D. and postdoctoral work -  we are very flexible in providing opportunities for scientific visits of differing lengths, for instance in the framework of sabbaticals or several-month programmes of collaborative research.

We greatly welcome requests and proposals for scientific visits and collaborations in this framework. If you are considering such a visit, please contact either the Visitors Program directly, or the scientist you expect to collaborate with, or both.

Distinguished PKS Postdoctoral Fellow

The institute awards one Distinguished PKS Postdoctoral Fellowship per year. The appointment is for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The successful candidate will complement research areas pursued at the institute and conduct independent studies. Distinguished PKS postdoctoral fellows appear personally along with the departments and groups on the main research page of the institute. We expect the next call to open in fall 2024.

ELBE Postdoc Program

The Center for Systems Biology Dresden, a joint initiative by the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and the TU Dresden, seeks postdocs with backgrounds in Computational Biology, Theoretical Physics, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or Cell and Developmental Biology. Applications are administered by the visitors program. Details on the application procedure can be found here.

Advanced Study Groups

The mpipks hosts one or two Advanced Study Groups each year. Each group consists of several scientists working on a focused, cutting-edge, theme. The group will attract further shorter term visitors for seminars, lectures, discussions and other meetings.

mpipks welcomes applications for future Advanced Study Groups. Potential organizers should contact one of the directors of the institute.
