SCOPE:

The last years have seen a tremendous revival of interest in the physics of Rydberg atoms and molecules from many different perspectives. Electronic systems in highly excited states touch a wide range of research areas including, among others, ultra-long range molecules, artificial (``designer'') atoms, quantum chaos, quantum information and ultracold Rydberg gases and plasmas. Emphasis is also put on many-body phenomena, quantum ``engineering'' and manipulation, as well as high-precision tests of fundamental theories. Due to the many fields involved, physical insight and technical know-how is scattered over different communities. Thus, the motivation of the seminar is twofold: On the one hand, it aims to bring together experts in a highly innovative research field to discuss their latest results on a high level. On the other hand, groups from various fields of atomic, condensed matter and plasma physics are assembled to foster mutual understanding and learning.
The four-week meeting is centered around a one-week workshop (May 3 - 7) with oral and poster contributions covering the full variety of Rydberg physics (there will also be a special issue of J. Phys. B, with regularly refereed articles). The remaining three weeks will focus on more specific aspects, with tutorials aiming at PhD-students, postdocs and researchers entering the field, complemented by informal discussion groups and talks for a smaller expert audience. The seminar should also provide a forum to identify new topics that may emerge in the future.
