Charge fractionalization in physical systems governed by a Dirac-like matrix equation in the presence of defects has been established by various formal arguments, and has been verified experimentally for two dimensional polymers. Recently the same formal development has been achieved in two dimensions for graphene. These phenomena will be described and the question of how to encounter them in a functional integral will be addressed.
