The purpose of the seminar is to bring together active
researchers working in the field of both topological
and nontopological coherent excitations
on nonlinear lattices
and to promote an information exchange of
concepts and methods in theory and applications. Theoretical
aspects include quantum versus classical systems, dissipative
versus conservative systems,
analytical versus statistical
approaches. Experimental aspects vary over a vast field including
many magnon and many phonon bound states in solids,
nonlinear
optics in photonic crystals, complex structures of weak superconducting
links.
The four week seminar is structured into a first
Focus Week on 'Nonlinear Deformation Waves'
(Sep 4-9), a Focus Week on
'Computational Approaches to Nonlinear Phenomena'
(Sep 10-15),
a Focus Week on 'Quantum Discrete Breathers'
(Sep 17-21) and a Workshop
on 'Localized Excitations on Lattices - From Classical
to Quantum, From Theory to Practice' (Sep 24-28).
During Focus Weeks
two talks will be scheduled in the morning, while the afternoons
will be reserved for joint disussions and research. Poster sessions
will allow for additional participant contributions.
During the workshop invited and contributed talks will be
scheduled in the morning and afternoon sessions, with additional
poster sessions scheduled for the evenings.

The deadline for applications
is June 30, 2001.
The workshop registration fee is 150 DM. Costs for accommodation and meals will be
covered by the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems. In exceptional cases, limited funding is available to
partly cover travel expenses.
