HINTS FOR LIVING, WORKING AND SURVIVING IN DRESDEN

organisation
  • If the organizers are unavailable please contact Ms. Katrin Lantsch concerning the rooms in the guest houses. Her secretariat is in room 2A 11 (tel. 871-2111).

  • The organizers room is 2B 21 (tel. 871-2221).

at the institute
  • You can use the library at any time you want. Email, telnet and ftp-services are available.
public transport
  • Public transport is a really convenient choice for getting around in Dresden. A Ticket costs 2.70DM and takes you everywhere in Dresden. If you plan to use it extensively, we suggest that you get yourself the one-week ticket for 24,-DM. Tickets can be bought at the station of tram 3 just outside the institute.

money
  • We are trying to get a complete funding for all of you, but our budget is limited. Those of you who cannot be funded have to pay the insitute 40DM/day for accomodation (meals not included).

  • There is a "Sparkasse" just down the "Nöthnitzer Straße" (towards "Plauen") which features an international automated teller machine.

food and beverages
  • Eventually you may want to get yourself some food and beverages from outside the institute's cafeteria. Insider sources have told us that within 5 minutes walk along the tram tracks towards the city center, you will find a bakery and a butcher on the right hand side of the street. A few more minutes in the same direction will get you to a fruit store and a general food store (Konsum) on the left hand side of the street.

  • The Technical University Dresden (TUD) has a mensa which offers a large variety of meals every weekday. Follow the Nöthnitzer Str. in the direction of new MPI buildings and take the third (?) street to the left.

  • You can also go towards the center of Plauen, where you will find many shops. Just follow the Nöthnitzer Str. (direction opposite to the TUD)

  • In case you want to sample the local cuisine, there are many restaurants and pubs located in the "Neustadt" (new city) area of Dresden. Take tram 3 until station "Albertplatz", and enjoy your meal.

shopping
  • The main shopping part inside Dresden is very close to the main train station. Take tram 3 until "Pirnaischer Platz" and then its 300m until the "Prager Straße".

Dresden Striezelmarket
  • The Dresden Striezelmarket is the oldest still operating christmas market (they claim it, at least). Usually, it closes on the December 22th. So there is time to spend some money!

Dresden Semperopera
  • The Semperopera in Dresden is shurely one of the best operae in Europe. This is mostly due to the Staatskapelle Dresden which is not only a famous orchestra for its own but also the orchestra of the opera. During the time of our little symposium they will play Janaceks Jenufa (Sat) and Tschaikowskys Nutcracker (So,Mo,Tu). For those of you who want to attend a concert we are trying to get tickets.
