Magnetization curve of the Shastry-Sutherland model

SrCu2(BO3)2 is known for its dimerized ground state, almost flat excitations, and a concomitant large number of plateaux in its magnetization curve. Recent high-field magnetization measurements up to the region of 100T give new insight into two prominent plateaux at one half and one third of the saturation magnetization. This motivates us to reconsider the magnetization process of the associated spin-1/2 Shastry-Sutherland model using numerical methods. The one-half plateau is very prominent in the limit of weakly coupled dimers, but is found to be destabilized close to the parameter regime relevant to SrCu2(BO3)2. By contrast, the one-third plateau is stabilized in the relevant parameter regime via a semi-classical order-by-disorder mechanism.
