Stop-and-Go Waves from Arial Photographies, Sand Dunes in Hamamatsu, 2nd order CA for Traffic Flow

The above given CA was originally constructed to model one-line traffic flow on a highway (From Modified KdV-Equation to a Second-Order CA for Traffic Flow, Emmerich e.a., Physica A). Its pecularity is the direct derivation from the MKdV-Equation. The picture impressions on this page make one wonder: 'Is it maybe a better model for granular flow?' Traffic flow and granular flow actually show a lot of resemblances. In Nonequilibrium phase separation in traffic flow, for example, Hayakawa and Nakanishi found the same phase separations between a linearly unstable and a stable phase for a generalized optimal velocity model for traffic flow, a granular model and the fluid dynamical traffic model by Kerner and Konhäuser. This leads to the suggestion of a wider universality class of dissipative particle dynamics.
